Hints & Quest Guide

Step by step instructions for guiding your crew successfully through the Escape Quest Escape Room kit.

How the Game Works.

To finish the Escape Quest, players will complete 6 quests. This involves scavenging for clues and solving puzzles.

The beginning of each Quest explains what needs to be done. As the crew leader, you will guide the team through the game by reading out loud the story and following the instructions.

When players have found the quest items, you will give them the indicated card in return. For example, when all 5 objects from the first quest are found, players receive the Fire card.

Wait! Remember to Snap a Selfie!

Quest card 1

Bored Dinosaur

Quest 1:

In this quest, players must hunt for 5 items so they can make a fire and cook a meal (easy).

Read out this intro:

You awake in an ancient forest with a small village nearby. How did you get here?

Nervously, you approach the village and ask the chief where you are. He grunts, "Welcome to Boredom Village."

It turns out that the only food he has to eat is raw broccoli … Gosh!

Maybe you could make fire and cook something yummy. First, you'll need to find 5 items:

Quest 1 goal card

Show the kids the silhouettes on the Quest Goal card, so they know what they're looking for.

The kids then hunt for these 5 cards around the room:

Fire incan card

Once they find all 5 items, give the crew the Fire card, and read this next part of the storyline out loud:

The villagers love the meal and say thanks by giving you a glowing gem and a strange device.  The device has some words written on it: "Temporal Instrument of Many Eras". What could that mean?

Hand players the Glowing Gem and updated T.I.M.E. Machine cards. Then narrate:

Suddenly, the glowing gem jumps into the device like a magnet and it starts humming. As the noise grows louder, you hear someone yell:

Run! It's a DINOSAUR!

Then everything goes white …

Lead players to the Incan Chocolate room, for Quest 2.

Quest 2 goal card

Incan Chocolate

Quest 2:

In this quest, players will make chocolate by combining many items in a recipe (easy).

Waking up beside a large lake, you remember the dinosaur. Gulp … You're stuck in the past!

The strange device must be a T.I.M.E. Machine! It's broken so you'll need to find the 5 missing parts to get home. The first step is to make some chocolate fuel to power the machine. The ingredients must be around here somewhere…

Quest 2 goal card

Show the kids the silhouette card, so they know what they're looking for.

Give out the reward cards, from the recipe, as the kids complete each set. Add your own flavor like:

Wow, those green leaves sure make a lot of smoke! What could we use that for?

Chocolate card

Once they've found all the items and 'made' the chocolate, narrate with an excited voice:

After chopping, mixing, and cooking all the honey, milk, and cocoa, you've made the world's first chocolate! Epic!

Give players the Chocolate et en T.I.M.E. Machine cards. (Or, you could use a real chocolate instead!)

You cautiously place some chocolate in the T.I.M.E. Machine and it hums loudly once again. Hold on!

Lead players to the Locked Treasure room for Quest 3.

Quest 3 card

Locked Treasure

Quest 3:

In this quest, players will deduce a 3 digit code to unlock a box (medium difficulty).

After the humming stops, you awake in a dark room. As your eyes adjust, you can hear the sound of marching in the streets outside - it's Roman soldiers! Let's find another part for the T.I.M.E. Machine before they find us!

Quest 3 goal

Show the kids the silhouettes on the Quest Goal card, so they know they're trying to work out a 3 digit code.

The numbers are written on hidden objects, and the scroll shows the correct order as:

Wax seal card

Update the story when players work the code out:

As you rummage through the locked box, you find some old socks, Brutus' dagger, and a wax seal. None of this seems very useful. But then, the end of the wax seal gets sucked into the T.I.M.E. Machine and that familiar humming returns …

Give players the Wax Seal et en updated T.I.M.E. Machine. Lead players to the Get Arty room for Quest 4.

Quest 4 card

Get Arty

Quest 4:

In this quest, players will bring a canvas painting to life using a magic potion (hard difficulty).

This time you awake in the messiest room you've ever seen. With brushes and paint everywhere you're not sure how you'll find the next part for the T.I.M.E. Machine.

Better start exploring!

Quest 4 card

Show the kids the silhouettes on the Quest Goal card, so they know they're trying to find the puzzle pieces and potion.

Once players complete the jigsaw puzzle, explain that they've done a painting:

Since you're not sure what to do next, you take a break and enjoy painting an artwork. Upon admiring your work you notice a strange mark appear in the corner. It looks like some kind of potion.

What could that mean?

Canvas alive card

Once players complete the jigsaw puzzle, and find the other items:

Once players complete the jigsaw puzzle, and find the other items, use your best narrator voice to update the story:

When you pour the magical talking potion onto the painting it starts to shimmer...

"Hello," says the painting in a beautiful European accent.

"It's been so long since I've had a chance to talk to someone", it goes on to say. "What are you looking for, darlings?"

<Turn to the kids expecting them to say that they're after the key. When they do continue>

"I have just the thing," says the painting, "It's inside one of these books. Use those playing cards to work out which page it's hidden in."

When the kids find it narrate:

Your heart beats quickly as the key turns inside the T.I.M.E. Machine. A robotic voice announces:

"Beginning transportation to alternate reality."

Lead players to the Steampunked room for Quest 5.

Quest 5 card

Quest 5:

In this quest, players will construct a Tesla gun to open a sealed box (easy).

Rattle, rattle, rattle … Rattle, rattle, rattle.

You awake on a steam-powered train in a steampunk world, unlike anything you've ever imagined. A yellow haze fills the air, and strange devices surround you. You know that getting home is more important than ever.

Quest 5 goal card

Show the kids the silhouettes on the Quest Goal card, so they know they're trying to find the cartridge and locked box.

Once they have completed the gun, give them the card and narrate:

Holding your breath, you cautiously fire the Tesla gun at the D.R.I.L. box.

Sounds the box as the force field is disabled, revealing a warm superconductor inside.

Give players the Warm Superconductor card, and updated T.I.M.E. Machine then continue:

With fingers crossed you place the warm superconductor in the device.

"Beep. Beep. Beep. Fast forward activated," it says, and your vision turns white...

Lead players to the Future Hacker room for Quest 6.

Quest 6 intro card

Future Hacker

Quest 6:

In this quest, players will activate an AI to collect the final piece of the T.I.M.E. Machine (hard).

Boing - clash - BOOM!

This trip was different. Very different. Your stomach feels like it's turned upside down and the bright lights are still spinning around your head. You're in a completely white room with no windows and minimal furniture. What is this? And when will you get home?

Quest 6 goals card

Once players find the Power Cable and Future Tech Device give them the Racoon Artificial Intelligence and say:

"LOLs, nice 2 meet u. Haven't hand many time travelers com by in a while. Well, come to think of it I'm not sure how long I've been out of charge for..."

"Anyway, if you're like the rest of the 'travelers' then I'm sure you want to get home. I *could* help you, if I wasn't hungry. Bring me the right food, in the correct order, and I'll lend a hand... or at least unlock that box for you."

Clock card

The kids will need to find the food items, and make the connection between the number of sides on each piece and the numbers on the clock.

If they've found the food, but not worked the order out from the clock, use your best Racoon voice to say:

"That food looks yummy, but I need it in the correct order."

The correct order is: Circle, Square, Triangle, Hexagon.

Once the team works this out, narrate:

After a lengthy debate with the Artificial Raccoon, she opens the super lock. Epic! You now have all 6 missing parts to the T.I.M.E. Machine.

As you cautiously pour in the Time Juice, the machine says:

"Time controller fixed. Activate 'Take Me Home' protocol."

Bravo ! <celebrate> Quête d'Évasion completed, with all crew members returning home safe and sound!

Optional Posters and Party Invites

Escape Quest also includes optional posters, and party invites, to make the experience even more immersive. None of these are required to play the game, but if you want to go the extra mile, it's totally worth it!

These can be found in the download and can be printed in several ways:

  • Invitations: print as 4x6 photos (normal photos).
  • Posters: Ledger/A3 or Legal/A4

Prep The Clue Cards

Easy setup instructions.

Separate the cards for each quest into separate piles. They're in the correct order, so this should be a simple matter of flipping through the pile until you find the divider cards in the image above.

In the end, you should have 6 piles of quest cards, along with a 7th stack which you will carry with you as you take the kids through the game.

Set up the game in 6 different locations around your home/school. Be creative and match the setting to the quest. For example, the Bored Dinosaur quest works great outside. Follow the steps below for any particular setup steps for each quest.

Bored Dinosaur & Incan Chocolate.

No special setup instructions here. Just hide the cards around 2 different locations with varying difficulty.

There are no puzzles in these quests, so the kids have a chance to get used to how the game basics work.

The title cards for each quest don't need to be hidden but can be taped to the door or wall, so you don't forget which room belongs to which quest!

Note: You can adjust the difficulty of the hiding spots for a variety of ages by choosing higher or harder-to-find locations for older children.

3: Locked Chest.

Chest card

This quest has an optional mod where you can replace the locked chest card with a 3 digit combination lock. A bike chain around a kitchen tub or shoebox works great. If you do this the combination is 752.

Bike chain on a box

4: Get Arty

Art puzzle pieces

Cut this painting card into 9 squares and hide each separately in the room. The kids will find these and put it together.

Key puzzle card

Also, hide the key card inside a book on page 18, and place the book in plain sight. The 2 playing cards hint at how to find this.

5: Steampunked!

Quest card 5

No special setup instructions here. Just hide the cards around the location with varying difficulty.

6: Future Hacker

Time Juice: Place the Time Juice card inside a small box, then leave it in plain sight in the middle of the room.

Padlock: Place the padlock card on top of the box containing the Time Juice. Players need to find the combination before they can open it.

Optional: replace the Padlock card with a combination lock, or bike chain, and set the code to: 1436.

Bike chain on a box

Remaining cards

You'll carry the remaining cards with you as you take the kids through the game. Give them the reward cards as they find objects, solve puzzles, and progress through the quests.

For now, just keep all cards under the Game Start card in the order they come in.

Game start card

How to solve puzzles.

Quest 2 goal card

Initially, the only challenge is for the kids to scavenge for puzzle cards and get used to how the game works.

Although this seems too easy, it's a very deliberate part of the Escape Quest's design and allows younger players to jump right in and enjoy themselves without getting stuck.

New puzzle types are added as you progress through the story. You'll need to guide them through each chapter, give hints, and let them know when they've solved a problem.

As the team leader, you'll guide them through these various challenges, provide hints, and let them know when they've solved a problem.

When the game starts, follow the Quest Guide on your phone. Don't worry too much about this right now, as it's all very simple to follow.

Get The Escape Party Started:

Game start card

Optionally, play this 60-minute timer video on your phone.

When you're ready to begin, open the Quest Guide on your phone and prepare to lead your group through the perilous quests!

Now it's time to start the game!

Tips For Larger Groups:

  2. Each group can play simultaneously.
  3. Teams require 1 adult leader to guide them through using the Quest Guide on their phone. This provides all solutions and hints.

Designed Just For Kids

Unfortunately, there just aren't many easy escape games for kids. While a few providers are starting to make family-friendly experiences most are about creating an immersive challenge for adults (which is why we love them so much.)

This easy escape game kit bridges that gap and allows you to craft a super rewarding experience for your crew. The puzzles have been designed with this goal in mind and are ideally suited to 6-8-year-olds.

Check out La momie perdue if you're after a more challenging game for older kids (10-12 year olds).

Kids work together.

"I used the kids escape room package this weekend, and it was a huge hit, took just under an hour for them to do, and I would highly recommend for this age group."

Thanks to Lesley Gillen for sending in these pics of her party.

Tested, Played, and Loved by Kids a Million Times Over

4.8/5 stars on Facebook. We love to thrill!

Example from Deborah's Party.

You get to choose how much effort you put into prep.

Although the Escape Quest kit is a complete game, that's ready to print and play, it's a lot of fun to customize (and super easy).

It comes with the editable game template so you can adjust anything.

Here's what Deborah did for her party:

Top customizations:

  • Use real life boxes and locks to replace the printed ones.
  • Add mini-games.
  • Use props like real chocolate.
Beginning of the game.

We had 7 boys aged 11/12 who were a good group (up for the challenge and wanted to do it properly).

To make it exciting my husband dressed up as the Indian leader and waited in the garden for them. I blindfolded them all and they held onto each other like a train to go round to the garden for their first mission.

After the outdoor round, we moved into the kitchen for the making chocolate challenge. I stuck the cards onto some items like the milk in the fridge, a toy goat, some branches. Favourite was putting the cocoa card on the Cocopops. They were especially happy to dive into the big chocolate bar they got as loot for this round.

iPad combination puzzle raccoon

Quête d'Évasion is split into 6 chapters spread across different times in earth's history. While the 1st chapter is very easy each room unlocks new and exciting puzzle types. This allows younger kids to have a go while enabling the older ones to still experience a rewarding challenge suited to their age.

Note: the 6 chapters are modular so if you feel the last few are too difficult simply leave them out.

Most of the puzzles in Quête d'Évasion involve scavenging for clues and joining the dots together. This allows 8-year-olds and 10-year-olds to both enjoy the same game since you'll be the one hiding the clues around your home. By stashing a few in higher, or harder, places everyone gets to have a go with fewer arguments.

Note: This game's designed for young kids so if you've got teenagers I'd recommend this game instead -> Révolte Rebelle.

Spotify Theme Music

Spotify grit logo

No DIY escape game is complete without themed background music. This Spotify playlist has 3 songs for each of the rooms in the challenge.

For example, the Bored Dinosaur challenge has Tribal Drumming whereas Future Hackers is all about quirky synth.

When you start the game just open up Spotify and hit play on the first song. Then skip/back depending on how fast the crew is going.

Listen to the playlist here.
