A mystery is afoot! You'll need to be crafty to solve it... here, take these notes from Sherlock's playbook:

It's All About Asking the Right Questions

If you're a Sherlock fan like us, then you already understand the power of deduction. Making small observations and asking the right questions can help you solve even the most complex cases. Just like any real detective work, winning an escape room game also requires good detective skills. At Lock Paper Scissors, we design our mystery escape room games to challenge even the most seasoned detective. Our inspiration comes from great fictional detectives such as Sherlock Holmes, Jessica Fletcher, Nancy Drew, and Hercule Poirot. Like these characters, we believe that the key to success is in the questions you ask.
So, if you're looking to up your escape room game and solve the mystery like a pro, here are 10 questions you should always ask:

1. How Did You Know The Victim?

This may seem like an obvious question, but it's important to get an idea of the relationship between the victim and your suspect. Understanding the victim's relationships is crucial in solving the mystery. It can help shed light on potential motives and help you rule out suspects.

You need to think like Sherlock and figure out how the victim and suspect are connected. Was the victim related to the suspect? Did they work together? Were they friends? And if they were friends, were they close friends or just acquaintances? All of these details can help you solve the mystery.

2. What Do You Do For a Living?

It is a must to ask your suspect what they do for a living. A person's occupation can provide you with key information to help solve the mystery. Moreover, background reconnaissance is a basic rule for any good detective.

Did the victim and suspect work in the same industry? Does the suspect have access to the murder weapon? For example, if the victim was poisoned, does the suspect work in a lab or have access to chemicals? If the victim was shot, does the suspect work with guns?

3. Were You Close With the Victim?

envy-playing-on-couch-400x400

We have seen this being asked on many detective shows, and there is a reason why. It helps you understand the dynamics between the victim and your suspect. A person's relationship with the victim can help you understand their potential motive.

Issues like fights, financial disputes, or long-standing feuds are all reasons why someone might want to kill another person. By understanding the victim's relationships, you can get closer to solving the mystery.

4. When Did You See The Deceased Last?

You may not have the best forensics team at your disposal, but you can still use deduction to solve the mystery. Asking when the suspect last saw the victim can help you understand the timeline of events.

This question can also help you rule out suspects. If the suspect has an alibi for the time of the murder, then you can eliminate them from your list of suspects.

5. What Was The Victim Wearing When You Last Saw Them?

Murderers often leave behind clues at the crime scene. And one of the most common pieces of evidence is the victim's clothing. By understanding what the victim was wearing, you can get an idea of how they were killed.

Was the victim wearing a dress or a suit? Were they wearing any jewelry? These details can help you understand the events leading up to the murder.

6. Where Were You At The Time Of The Murder?

Asking for an alibi is a classic detective move for a reason. It's one of the best ways to rule out suspects. If the suspect has a solid alibi, then you can move on to the next suspect.

Now, this may be a little difficult to do in an escape room, but you can still ask the suspect where they were when the victim was murdered. This question can help you narrow down your list of suspects.

7. Do You Know Anyone That Might Have A Reason To Kill The Victim?

Go blunt with your suspects and ask them if they know anyone that would want to kill the victim. It will help you understand the victim's relationships and determine who might have a motive.

Remember that just because the suspect knows someone with a motive doesn't mean they are the murderer. But it's still a valuable piece of information that can help you solve the mystery.

Sometimes, people are killed for reasons that are not obvious. By asking this question, you might be able to uncover crucial information that can help solve the mystery.

8. Can You Expand On Any Of The Clues Or Evidence?

Throughout the game, you will gather clues and evidence. And while some of this information will be helpful, some of it will be vague or incomplete. That's why it's important to ask your suspects if they can expand on any clues or evidence.

Your suspects might have information that can help you understand the clues. They might be able to provide you with a piece of new information that could change the entire investigation. So, it's important to ask them about the clues and evidence that you have.

9. What Do You Know About The Victim's Family?

In many cases, murders are committed for personal reasons. And oftentimes, those personal reasons are related to the victim's family. By understanding the victim's family, you can get closer to solving the mystery.

Ask the suspect about the victim's parents, siblings, and children. Do they know of any issues that the family was having? Did the victim have any problems with their relatives? These questions can help you understand the victim's relationships and figure out who might have had a reason to kill them.

10. What Was Your Reason For Being At The Crime Scene?

This is a crucial question that you must ask all of the suspects. You need to know why they were at the crime scene. And most importantly, you need to know if they have an alibi for the time of the murder. Remember that just because someone has an alibi doesn't mean they're not the murderer.

These are just some of the questions that you should ask your suspects to win an escape room game. Asking the right questions is essential to solving the mystery. So, make sure to ask these questions during your investigation.
