Stuck solving an escape room puzzle

Why You Struggle To Solve Escape Room Puzzles

With escape rooms all the rage these days, it's a little embarrassing to be awful at them. No judgment though, let's see if these tips can help you out.

Don't worry, it's easier than you think to improve your escape room skills. Here are ten reasons why you might be struggling:

First, Let's Be Honest... Is This Your Thing?

Maybe you should start by acknowledging that you could be the Merry and Pippin of your escape room group. Escape room puzzles can be difficult, and not everyone is cut out for them. If you find yourself struggling to solve escape room puzzles, there may be some good reasons why.

Don't take it personally, but some people just can't play guitar or master chess or figure out the Dewey Decimal System. That doesn't make them less smart; it just makes them Merry and Pippin. They've got an important role to play, and are an indispensible part of the team, but are clearly not the masterminds behind the operation!

The good news is, anybody can enjoy escape rooms. It doesn't matter how 'good' you are at them, so long as you don't give up, and have fun with friends in the process.

You're Too Focused On The Big Picture

Stuck playing Envy

When you're solving escape room puzzles, it's important to focus on the task at hand and not get overwhelmed by the big picture. If you're constantly thinking about how to escape the room and what the next steps are, you will not be able to focus on the puzzle in front of you.

Solving escape room puzzles is all about baby steps. You need to focus on the one thing you're working on and not get ahead of yourself.

For instance, if you're working on a puzzle that requires you to match up symbols, don't start thinking about what those symbols mean in the grand scheme of things. Just focus on matching the symbols and see where that takes you.

You're Overthinking The Puzzles

Escape room puzzles are often deceptively simple. The key is not to overthink them.

If you find yourself struggling with a puzzle, take a step back and look at it from a different perspective. Sometimes the solution is right before you, but you're not seeing it because you're overthinking it.

You're Not Working As A Team

Some of us believe that they're Sherlock Holmes and can solve escape room puzzles on their own. But the truth is, escape rooms are meant to be solved as a team.

If you're not working together with your team, you're not going to be able to escape the room. It's important to communicate with your team and bounce ideas off of each other.

Remember, even Sherlock Holmes needs a Watson sometimes.

You're Not Good At Communicating

Do you remember Rajesh Koothrapalli from The Big Bang Theory? He was the brilliant astrophysicist who couldn't talk to women.

Just like Rajesh, you may be brilliant at escape room puzzles, but if you can't communicate with your team, you will not be able to escape the room.

It's important to be able to communicate with your team members and share ideas. If you're not good at communicating, you may find yourself struggling with escape room puzzles.

You're Not Paying Attention To Detail

Epic DIY escape room party with the Lost Mummy

Escape room puzzles often require you to pay attention to small details. If you're not paying attention to the small details, you will struggle with escape room puzzles.

For instance, if you're looking for a key to unlock a door, you may overlook it if it's not in plain sight. Paying attention to detail is important when solving escape room puzzles.

You Panic Easily

Panicking is not going to help you escape from an escape room. If you find yourself panicking when solving escape room puzzles, it's important to take a step back and take a deep breath.

Staying calm is important when solving escape room puzzles. If you panic, you're not going to be able to think clearly, and you're not going to be able to escape the room.

You're Easily Intimidated

Playing a zombie escape room... and running out of time!

Many escape rooms are designed to be intimidating. They're dark, they're small, and they're full of puzzles.

If you find yourself easily intimidated by escape rooms, you'll struggle with escape room puzzles. It's important to keep your cool and not let the escape room get to you.

For instance, if you're in a dark escape room and you can't see anything, it's important to remember that darkness is just an illusion. There's nothing to be afraid of.

You're Claustrophobic

Some escape rooms can be small and cramped. If you're claustrophobic, you may have difficulty solving escape room puzzles.

If you're claustrophobic, it's important to remember that you can always ask to leave the escape room if you feel like you're going to have a panic attack.

Escape rooms are meant to be fun, so don't put yourself in a situation where you're not going to be able to enjoy yourself.

Maybe It's Your Team

Not all teams are created equal. Some teams are the Los Angeles Dodgers, and others are the Miami Marlins. There's a reason why some teams are more successful than others.

If you're struggling to escape from an escape room, it may be because of your team. It is possible that your team just doesn't mesh well together. Maybe you have too many leaders, or maybe there's just not enough chemistry.

Whatever the reason, if you're struggling to escape from an escape room, it may be because of your team. Try to find a team that fits your skill level, personality, and temperament. It could do wonders for your escape room experience.

You're Not Immersing Yourself In The Experience

Escape rooms are designed to be immersive experiences.

It's important to remember that you're not just solving puzzles; you're also trying to escape from a room. In order to escape from the room, you need to immerse yourself in the experience.

This means that you need to pay attention to your surroundings, you need to interact with your team, and you need to use all of your senses. If you're not immersing yourself in the escape room, you're not going to escape.

You Forgot To Go To The Washroom

This one is escape room 101. If you're going to be in an escape room for an hour, you need to go to the washroom before you enter the room.

There's nothing worse than trying to escape from an escape room and having to go to the washroom. It's an escape room buzzkill.

So, if you're going to be in an escape room, make sure you use the washroom before you enter. It'll make the experience more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Okay. We might be kidding with the last one. But the rest are escape room problems that you might not have considered!
